Dr. Keith Black is head of the new Neurosurgical Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical
Center in Los Angeles. He is one of the foremost neuosurgeons in the US, and at age 40 is
also one of the leading researchers in the field, specializing both clinically and
scientifically in brain tumors. He was featured in TIME Magazine in 1997 (on the cover),
profiled in the "Heroes of Medicine" special issue. As part of BreakThrough's
co-promotion with TIME, an extended special Heroes of Medicine profile of Dr. Black aired
on the show the week of November 9, 1997.
Dr. Charles Berde is Director of the Pain Treatment Service at Boston's Children's
Hospital, and is one of the leading authorities on children's pain. He was also featured
both in TIME and on BreakThrough as one of the "Heroes of Medicine." He is a
devoted and effective clinician, and he and his colleagues have made important
contributions to the understanding and treatment of pain in children.
